European Grand Prix Shows Large Gap Remaining from Mercedes to Ferrari, Red Bull

During preparations for the European Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan, Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff said Ferrari and Red Bull were essentially level with Mercedes' performance. "The speed of both the Ferrari and Red Bull is pretty much where we are now," he said, per ESPN F1's Nate Saunders. "... We are seeing the convergence of performance between teams that naturally comes with stable regulations—and that has made the competition tougher than ever." That is true, to some extent. Ferrari and Red Bull are definitely getting quicker relative to Mercedes. But the results of Sunday's race in Baku showed it is premature to say the chasers are now on par with Mercedes (winners, lest we forget, of seven of the eight grands prix so f...

Why Williams Will Be the Team to Watch in 2016 European Grand Prix at Baku

For the third year in succession, the same old questions were being asked of same old Williams in the aftermath of the Monaco Grand Prix. Their car had performed competently in the early weeks of the season, good enough for the team to be regarded as the best of the rest behind the usual suspects after Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa both scored points in each of the first five races. But when Formula One returned to the tight and twisty streets of Monte Carlo—the first truly slow-speed, maximum-downforce venue of the season—they were nowhere. Again. Having qualified as high as third just two races earlier, Bottas was classified a pitiful 12th—penalised for hitting another car little more than 24 hours after his FW38 thr...

Formula 1’s Latest Rumours and Talk: Lewis Hamilton, McLaren-Honda and More

Formula One is heading to new territory this weekend as the Azerbaijani capital of Baku hosts the European Grand Prix for the first time, but Lewis Hamilton is not exactly enthusiastic about the challenge. The three-time world champion has generally excelled at street circuits throughout his F1 career, but after sampling the Baku City Circuit in the Mercedes simulator, Hamilton has likened the track to a motorway. And he has questioned why city-based tracks are not made like Monaco, where he claimed his first win of 2016 less than a month ago. With the European GP set to be the second in a series of six races in the space of eight weeks, F1 is quickly heading toward its midseason stage, and teams will soon begin to think about finalising th...
