Jeff Gordon Potentially to Replace Dale Earnhardt Jr. for Brickyard 400

Legendary NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon could make a brief return from retirement on July 24 at the Brickyard 400 if Dale Earnhardt Jr. isn't medically cleared for action.  Bob Pockrass of ESPN.com received confirmation of the backup plan from Hendrick Motorsports general manager Doug Duchardt on Friday. Duchardt stated a final decision about who will be behind the wheel of the No. 88 car is expected by Wednesday. "He's a four-time champion with 93 wins—he's not a bad person to think about to get in the car," Duchardt said. "This week, he's in France. ... If Dale is not able to go at Indianapolis, we'll put Jeff Gordon in the car. When Dale is ready, it's his car to get back into." Gordon retired after the 2015 season and maintained ...

Formula 1’s Latest Rumours and Talk: Ferrari, Max Verstappen and More

Although Mercedes have won all but one of the opening 10 races of the 2016 Formula One season, Ferrari have stubbornly refused to admit defeat in the world championship fight. Even when Sebastian Vettel was assaulted by Daniil Kvyat on the first lap in Russia and his Austrian Grand Prix ended with a spectacular tyre failure, Ferrari were convinced the title battle was not over. But with the Prancing Horse still without a victory, team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has offered a first hint that Ferrari are beginning to accept the reality of the situation, referring to the upcoming Hungarian GP as a must-win race. Ferrari's difficulties have allowed Red Bull to emerge as Mercedes' closest challengers in recent weeks, with Max Verstappen's con...

Should Formula 1 Fans Boo Drivers for Their Actions on the Race Track?

Formula One, it seems, is the only professional sport where it is not acceptable for fans to express themselves with boos. After last Sunday's British Grand Prix, some fans jeered Nico Rosberg during the podium celebrations, presumably in response to his crash with home favourite Lewis Hamilton at the previous race in Austria. "You have to understand that they're mad, passionate fans, and they feel like something wasn't right in the last race," Hamilton said, per the Independent's Jack de Menezes. "I imagine maybe when we get to Germany we will have the same thing, but I hope not because in sport it is not the done thing." Really? Not the done thing? Perhaps Hamilton missed the recent display from English fans after thei...

5 of the Most Interesting Radio Messages from 2016 British Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg became the first Formula One driver to be punished for breaking Formula One's 2016 team radio restrictions in the aftermath of Sunday's British Grand Prix. The German was catching Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the closing laps of the Silverstone race when he suffered a sudden gearbox glitch on Lap 46 of 52. With his pilot staring at the prospect of retiring and losing the lead of the drivers' standings, race engineer Tony Ross informed Rosberg how he could nurse the issue to the chequered flag, with the No. 6 car crossing the finish line in second place. But following a post-race stewards' investigation, Rosberg was handed a 10-second time penalty and dropped to third behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen. And to make matters...

Formula 1’s Latest Rumours and Talk: Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and More

Home and away fixtures are non-existent in Formula One, but Lewis Hamilton managed to turn the Silverstone circuit into a fortress during the British Grand Prix weekend. Having previously won at the circuit in 2008, 2014 and 2015, the home of British motorsport once again became Hamilton's own backyard for three days, with the triple world champion claiming a comfortable pole-to-flag victory in difficult conditions. After registering his fourth win of the season, the local hero has thanked the home crowd for energising him throughout the weekend, giving him the strength to perform at his strongest. As Hamilton produced his best performance of the season, Sebastian Vettel produced his weakest in Ferrari colours at Silverstone. The four-time ...

Safety Car Start Robs British Grand Prix of Potential Drama and Excitement

After experimenting with standing starts in 2013 and 2014, IndyCar reverted exclusively to safer rolling starts in 2015. Formula One, in contrast, has always used standing starts. That said, there have been a handful of exceptions—including Sunday's British Grand Prix—where the track was deemed too wet and races started behind the safety car. The decision to start the British Grand Prix behind the safety car made the race more predictable and robbed the event of much of its drama and excitement. One of The Sun's headlines called it the "dullest launch in history." As the race began (sort of), Sky Sports' David Croft informed viewers that it was just the 11th time in F1 history that a grand prix had started behind a safety c...

British Grand Prix 2016: Winners and Losers from Silverstone Race

Lewis Hamilton claimed his fourth victory of the 2016 Formula One season in Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Having claimed his sixth pole position of the year in qualifying, the three-time world champion was untroubled at the front of the field in a race of changeable conditions to register his third win in as many seasons at the home of British motorsport. Joining Hamilton on the podium were Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was rewarded with second place after one of the finest performances of his F1 career to date, and Nico Rosberg, who suffered a post-race time penalty after his Mercedes team broke the new rules concerning pit-to-car radio messages. On a weekend where Sebastian Vettel's season went from bad to worse and Force I...

Is Brad Keselowski Peaking at Just the Right Time?

The latest Sprint Cup victory of Brad Keselowski wasn't a testimony to great racing. It was a testimony to how many aspects of being a race driver Keselowski does well. A week after winning in Daytona Beach with bold defensive verve, Keselowski won in Sparta, Kentucky with ethanol fumes. At age 32, the Rochester Hills, Michigan native is in his natural prime, and that could be the central theme in a second Sprint Cup championship campaign. The relative hare who lost to the relative turtle was Carl Edwards. "I thought he was out of fuel and he wasn't," runner-up Edwards said of Keselowski. "He played it perfectly. He let me get to him and then stood on it. I had a shot at it. I just wasn't able to do it." If there had been a script, only th...
