NASCAR at Watkins Glen 2016: Live Results and Analysis from the Cheez-It 355

Denny Hamlin outlasted the field to capture the checkered flag in a wild Cheez-It 355 on Sunday afternoon at Watkins Glen International.  He only led 10 laps on the tricky upstate New York track, but they were the only ones that mattered and gave him the first road course win of his career and his second trip to Victory Lane this season.  Watkins Glen is known for producing it's share of wild races, and Sunday was no different. There were eight cautions during the 90-lap race, which was red flagged twice to clean up debris from big wrecks.  Joey Logano finished second.  Brad Keselowski, A.J. Allmendinger and Tony Stewart rounded out the top-five finishers.  NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series is off next weekend but returns ...

Can McLaren Deliver a 3rd F1 Drivers’ Championship for Fernando Alonso?

October will mark 10 years since the Brazilian Grand Prix at which Fernando Alonso clinched the second of his back-to-back Formula One titles with Renault. It seems almost silly to write it, but one of the best drivers of his generation has gone a decade without a championship. After two near-misses at Ferrari, Alonso has spent the last two years wandering in the wilderness at McLaren, another former champion struggling to regain lost glory. "In terms of driving, how competitive I can be or my third world championship hopes, then you drive for Mercedes or McLaren-Honda," Alonso said recently, per ESPN F1's Laurence Edmondson. That is an interesting statement considering the team finished ninth out of the 10 teams in the constructors' c...

Here is a look at the top 10 finishers from Saturday's race, with full results available at NASCAR.com: While Sprint Cup regulars largely dominated the race, it had Xfinity Series standings implications as well, with Elliott Sadler maintaining an 11-point lead over Daniel Suarez thanks to a sixth-place finish. NASCAR at Watkins Glen 2016 Qualifying Results: Race Order, Times and Reaction

Carl Edwards has never won a Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International, but he put himself in ideal position to do so Saturday by capturing the pole for the Cheez-It 355. Edwards beat out Kyle Larson for the top spot by nearly two-tenths of a second. Here is a look at how the entire 40-car field will look when drivers cross the start-finish line to begin Sunday's race As NASCAR's Holly Cain pointed out, Edwards has been masterful in qualifying at road courses this season: Here's a look at the lap that earned him the opportunity to lead the field in the Cheez-It 355, courtesy of Fox Sports NASCAR: No active driver with at least three career Sprint Cup starts at Watkins Glen has a better average finish than Edwards' 8.4, acco...

Maurizio Arrivabene Has Taken Ferrari as Far as He Can in Formula 1

December 2014. Less than three weeks after the final grand prix of another long, hard year, Ferrari's factory in the Italian town of Maranello was a dark, quiet and lonely place. No Fernando Alonso. No Luca di Montezemolo. No Stefano Domenicali. No Marco Mattiacci. No Pat Fry. No Nikolas Tombazis. No Hirohide Hamashima. And no light at the end of the tunnel. With the exception of Alonso, who fled the sinking ship to dive onto the McLaren-Honda lifeboat, all those men—those servants and, in some cases, stalwarts of the Prancing Horse—had paid for Ferrari's first winless season in two decades with their jobs. And as the Christmas and New Year period—a time for celebrations, fresh starts and ambitious targets—approache...

NASCAR at Watkins Glen 2016: Start Time, Ticket Info, Lineup, TV Schedule, More

A thick fog and a youngster by the name of Chris Buescher threw the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series into a frenzy last week at Pocono Raceway, making Sunday's Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International one of the most important dates on the calendar. Buescher emerged from the fog with the checkered flag after last Sunday's event bled into Monday, making the Chase scene more complicated than ever as notable names once again missed out on an automatic bid. Random winners and shuffling on the leaderboard are exactly what NASCAR needs at this time of year, with a new sense of desperation and an anything-can-happen vibe seizing the series down the stretch. Here's a look at everything you need to know about Sunday's must-see event.       ...

Formula 1’s Latest Rumours, Talk: Jenson Button to Williams, McLaren-Honda, More

With Formula One's summer break just beginning, decision time is fast approaching for Jenson Button. Unlike his previous retirement sagas in 2014 and '15, when his attitude was "McLaren-Honda or nothing," the 2009 world champion has opportunities to remain in F1 next season, with Williams openly admitting their interest in Button. But Williams have warned Button to jump before he is pushed by McLaren, hinting the team will not wait for the 36-year-old when other drivers, including Sergio Perez, are available. At the halfway stage of 2016, most teams are already beginning to turn their attention to next season's major regulation changes, which are expected to make F1 faster and more appealing to drivers and spectators alike. With the 2017 ca...

Should Williams Sign Jenson Button, Felipe Massa or Someone Else for 2017?

With Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari already confirming their driver lineups for the 2017 Formula One season, Williams are the best-placed team with possible vacancies for next year. Naturally, Williams and their current drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa, have become the subject of much speculation. And aside from the present lineup, deputy team principal Claire Williams recently mentioned McLaren's Jenson Button and Force India's Sergio Perez as possible candidates for one of her team's seats, per the Press Association (h/t the Daily Mail). So there are a lot of options for Williams, but which combination would be best for the team? And would that combination make sense for the drivers involved? Looking at the current drivers, ...

NASCAR at Watkins Glen: Preview and Prediction for the Cheez-It 355

Chris Buescher’s win in the Pennsylvania 400 puts the pressure on several of the Chase for the Sprint Cup bubble teams, Buescher’s No. 34 team being one of them. Buescher threw the entire picture into upheaval. When wild cards like Buescher crash Victory Lane, the margin for error is about the width of a proton. The Sprint Cup Series now heads to Watkins-Glen for the second and final road-course race of the season. These races, like plate races and bullrings, don’t play favorites. This track will provide opportunity for drivers like A.J. Allmendinger, whose only win came at this track in 2014, to make their case for the Chase. Many drivers like Chase Elliott, Jamie McMurray and Kyle Larson are in danger of missing the play...

Chris Buescher’s Pocono Upset Adds Major Drama to Race for Remaining Chase Spots

To every fan who complains that the same drivers win all the races: Once in a great while, the Walter Mitty-esque tale of a Chris Buescher occurs, rare and unexpected. Buescher won the Pennsylvania 400, which was rained out on Sunday and concluded by fog—fog!—on Monday. After the pall fell over Pocono Raceway with 138 out of a scheduled 160 laps completed, the driver of the unfamiliar car at the front of the field was Chris Buescher, the reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, not his older cousin, James Buescher, who won the Camping World Truck Series title in 2012. It has become easier to tell one Buescher from another. "Pretty wild day," 23-year-old Chris said in the winner's media conference. "Pretty eventful weekend." Now...
