Why McLaren-Honda Had to Replace Jenson Button with Stoffel Vandoorne for 2017

Jenson Button finished a lapped 14th in the 2016 season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, but far more important for him was the result on the other side of the McLaren-Honda garage. Fernando Alonso's collision with the Haas of Esteban Gutierrez on Lap 17, which saw the Spaniard slam into the outside wall of Turn 3 before rolling repeatedly in the gravel trap, had ensured the second year of the renewed partnership had got off to a spectacular, if not exactly successful, start. Despite the sheer violence of the crash—Alonso experienced "a peak impact force of 46G" having glanced Gutierrez's rear-left wheel at 305 kilometres per hour, per motorsport.com's Jonathan Noble—the two-time world champion w...

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was just 0.275 seconds behind that time, while the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo took third and fourth, respectively, building on an impressive start to their practice runs. A roller-coaster day for Mercedes was compounded, however, after reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was unable to finish second practice following a hydraulic issue, settling in P7 as a result. The official Formula 1 Twitter account provided a look at the second practice times in full: Earlier...

Formula 1’s Latest Rumours and Talk: Lewis Hamilton, Daniil Kvyat and More

The 15th round of the 2016 Formula One season, the Singapore Grand Prix, will be the big test for Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. The Silver Arrows have dominated F1 for the last three seasons, but the team and drivers were utterly humiliated at the Marina Bay street circuit in 2015, when Hamilton was 1.5 seconds adrift of pole position as Mercedes were ambushed by Ferrari and Red Bull. Even now, nobody knows exactly why Mercedes were so anonymous last year, but Hamilton is convinced the team will be back to their best upon their return to Singapore this weekend. Someone who is slowly but surely getting back to his best is Daniil Kvyat, who is only just beginning to recover from the shock of being discarded by Red Bull earlier th...

The Formula One world will take a short break from the breathless coverage of the sport's sale to Liberty Media for the Singapore Grand Prix. In just eight years, the Singapore night race has established itself as an integral part of the F1 calendar. The "Monaco of the East," where the teams work all night and sleep all day, is run on a floodlit street circuit through the city. With back-to-back wins, Nico Rosberg now trails Lewis Hamilton by just two points in the drivers' championship, setting up a thrilling fight to the finish between the Mercedes team-mates. Mercedes struggled last year in Singapore, allowing Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel to snatch his fourth victory at the Marina Bay circuit, the most of any driver. Hamilton has won there...

NASCAR at Chicagoland 2016: Preview, Prediction for the TMNT 400

The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field is set, and the playoffs start this Sunday, September 18 at Chicagoland Speedway, site of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400. There are some new faces in the Chase. In the third year of this current format, Ryan Newman is out, but new faces to this Chase are Tony Stewart, Chase Elliott, Auston Dillon, Chris Buescher and Kyle Larson. Those five drivers have a lot of work to do to exit the Round of 16 (formerly known as the Challenger Round) and advance to the Round of 12 (formerly known as the Contender Round). This round may as well be the short-track circuit. We have a classic 1.5-mile intermediate track to commence the Chase, but Loudon and Dover close it out—two hard milers. We&rsquo...

Formula 1’s Latest Rumours, Talk: Renault Driver Decision, Romain Grosjean, More

With Felipe Massa and 2009 world champion Jenson Button resolving their futures over the Italian Grand Prix weekend, Formula One is waiting for Renault to make the next move in the driver market. The yellow team are expected to make significant progress under the new regulations in 2017 and, as such, have been linked to a number of drivers eager to further their careers with a full-blown factory operation. But with no outstanding candidates emerging, Renault have decided to delay a decision on their 2017 lineup as they continue to search for a driver who can lead them for years to come. Renault lost that driver approximately 12 months ago, when Romain Grosjean decided to leave Team Enstone and gamble on the brand-new, Ferrari-affiliated Haa...
