Two Big Winners Lose the Chase Touch as Joey Logano Conquers Talladega

Joey Logano captured the latter Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway—this one happened to be known as the Hellmann's 500—for the second year in a row, and the race took a toll on contenders, if not on race cars. What? A safe race at Talladega? Only eight cars were involved in crashes. On May 1, when Brad Keselowski won the GEICO 500 at the track, 56 cars were listed as involved in crashes. The starting field was 40, which meant that many drivers drove into more than one calamitous melee. Among the multiple crashers were such luminaries as Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Perhaps some caution—some professional reserve—was in order. As expected, Talladega took a toll on the Chase for the...

Formula 1’s Latest Rumours and Talk: Renault Driver Decision, Felipe Nasr, More

After completing the signing of Nico Hulkenberg from Force India, it seems Renault are close to finalising their driver lineup for the 2017 Formula One season. The team had reportedly intended to partner Hulkenberg with Valtteri Bottas, but the Finn's failure to wriggle his way out of his Williams contract has left Renault with a straight choice between one of their current drivers and their former reserve driver. So will Renault offer Kevin Magnussen a reprieve? Or will they sign Mercedes-backed youngster Esteban Ocon in order to have a French driver in a French car? As Renault edge towards identifying a new team-mate for Hulkenberg, it appears Force India are close to finding a replacement for the German. Ocon and Jolyon Palmer, Magnussen...

Would Nico Rosberg Make a Deserving Formula 1 Champion in 2016?

Back in 2014, there was a worry that, assisted by the ridiculous double-points rule, Nico Rosberg could win the Formula One title despite being overshadowed for most of the season by his Mercedes team-mate, Lewis Hamilton. Indeed, for most of their Mercedes tenure—and even before that—Hamilton has been the better driver. As NBC's Will Buxton pointed out during the broadcast of Sunday's United States Grand Prix, Rosberg has never beaten the Briton over the course of a full season, dating back to their karting days. Now, though, it looks increasingly likely that Rosberg will beat Hamilton this year and claim his first F1 drivers' title. The question then becomes: Would Rosberg be a worthy champion, or has he backed into the t...

After setting pole position on Saturday, the British driver produced a measured performance to secure a fourth win in Austin, Texas, and get his season back on track. Joining Hamilton on the podium were Nico Rosberg—who, with a 26-point lead over his Mercedes team-mate with three races remaining, can secure his first world championship at the upcoming Mexican GP—and Daniel Ricciardo, whose third-place finish made up for a messy day for Red Bull. With a look at outstanding drives by Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz Jr., another day to forget for Ferrari and a welcome return to the top 10 f...

NASCAR at Talladega 2016: Winners and Losers from the Hellmann’s 500

Joey Logano won the Hellmann’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway doing what he does best: restarts. He won the overtime restart and carried that all the way to Victory Lane in a crucial elimination race, breathing a big sigh of relief knowing that this track is behind him and the other 39 drivers. Carl Edwards summed up the perilous nature of racing at Talladega for the Hellmann’s 500. It also being an elimination race for the Round of 12 added an extra level of discomfort at a track known for its unpredictability. He told USA Today: Because I have wrecked racing up front, I’ve wrecked in the back and I’ve wrecked in the middle, and I can tell you it just feels better to be up front. You can’t make a plan th...

USA F1 Grand Prix 2016 Results: Winner, Standings, Highlights, Reaction

Lewis Hamilton led from start to finish to win the 2016 Formula One United States Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo on Sunday. Joey Logano overcame an early miscue on pit road to capture the checkered flag in Sunday afternoon's Hellman's 500 at Talladega Superspeedway and advance to the round of eight in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Logano almost fell out of contention early in the race when he dragged the jack out of his pit box with him and had to ride around the track with it still under the car. He recovered and led 45 laps for his second consecutive fall victory in Alabama. Austin Dillon, Martin Truex Jr., Chase Elliott and Brad Keselowski were eliminated from Chase contention. Dillon finished tied with Denny Hamlin for the eighth and final transfer spot, but Hamlin's third-place finish gave him the best finish of the round and the tiebreaker. Truex, who is i...
