Formula One helmets are not what they used to be. They still, of course, protect drivers from injury, but their meaning—particularly in recent years as drivers have swapped helmets on a weekly basis—has expanded significantly. As well as being an integral part of a competitor's survival kit, helmets are now the racing driver's equivalent of a personal statement. They are used to echo a sense of patriotism, to deliver messages and well wishes and, essentially, to have a little fun.
