Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Top 10 Drivers Who’ve Kissed the Bricks

There is sacred ground at Indianapolis Motor Speedway known as the "Yard of Bricks." It took 63 days in 1909 to lay 3.2 million bricks each weighing nine and a half pounds. Gradually patches of asphalt were added to repair rough sections of the track, and by October of 1961, all parts of the track were paved except for a 36 inch strip at the start/finish line known as the Yard of Bricks. Dale Jarrett began the tradition of kissing the bricks after a win at the Brickyard 400 in 1996. His team joined him at the Yard of Bricks.
